The whole backyard was in shadows now. The only sunlight left fell on the roof. We stood there, holding hands. Sergeant Defenbargh didn’t look at us. His shirt was all the way untucked, and you could see the shadow where his beard was growing. His eyes were wide open and he had a big smile on his face as he yanked at the reins. “Giddy,” he said.  “Giddy giddy.”
