Men arrived in unmarked trucks.

We were told to clear the area for that day.

They were delivering crates of wolves.

They hadn’t asked permission from anyone we knew.

Our daffodils flourished like five-star generals.

We came inside with our games before dark.

I saw the brown dog and the black dog,

leashes trailing, pursue the blur of wolf.

I saw but I don’t know if I saw

a lost loner picked off or a new pack joining.
